Houston Leads Nation in New Apartment Developments

In 2025, Houston ranks as the No. 8 metro area in the US for new apartment construction.
The city is expected to add 14,439 new units by year’s end, ↓ 37.6% yearly but still among the nation’s most active markets.
Most new apartments are located in Houston proper (7,700+ units), with additional developments in Cypress (1,343) and Spring (1,109).
Over half of all new U.S. apartments in 2025, ~265K units, are being built in the southern states.
Experts cite streamlined regulations and rising home prices as key factors driving strong rental housing demand across the South.
